Pecos, TX

As you enter Dallas from the east, it looks like skyscrapers rocketing up from the middle of a forest, as if Ewoks suddenly decided they wanted to live in highrises. As you leave Dallas to the west, it take a while to get out of the DFW metroplex, but then the scenery gives way to farmland as far as the eye can see. They must be between crops, because there's just tilled red soil, which is bright against the intermittent green treelines.

I got progressively more depressed as I headed west today. Farmland gave way to patchy scrubland, almost like a teenage boy's scrappy beard. It doesn't have either the stark beauty of the desert or the lush beauty of forests or farmland. What started off with a few massive wind farms ended with pump jacks littering the landscape with their monotonous up-down-up-down like chickens pecking feed. Sprinkle a few huge oil refineries into the mix, and voila...

Now I'm in Pecos, TX. It looks like it's halfway to being a ghost town. Abandoned buildings, broken down cars. I kept thinking, I must be missing the nicer parts, but I drove around and didn't find any. It's definitely giving me the feeling of being very lucky to have what I do.

Yuck, yuck yuck. It's making me philosophical...but I'm sure I'll snap out of it and get funny again soon.

I'm grabbing a bite to eat, then I'll go get a shower and relax.
